HIV Prevention Program:

How to Use A Male Condom

  • Use latex or polyurethane condoms only. Lambskin condoms do not stop HIV.
  • Store condoms in a cool, dry place--not near a heater, on a windowsill, or in your pocket.
  • Don't use an old condom. Check the expiration date on the package.
  • Always have more than one condom with you, in case the first one breaks.
  • Handle condoms gently. Be careful of fingernails, teeth, and jewelry when you open condom packages and put condoms on.
  • Don't use two condoms together. If you are worried that a condom might break, use the extra-strength kind.
  • Practice using a condom before you have sex with someone else. Make sure you can put the condom on correctly, in the dark, and in a hurry!
  • Use a water-based lubricant (like K-Y Jelly, Wet, Astroglide or Probe) NOT an oil-based lubricant (like Vaseline, hand lotion, baby oil, massage oil or Crisco). Oil will break condoms. If Nonoxynol 9 causes irritation, don't use it.
  • Put the condom on as soon as the penis is hard, not just before ejaculation. If the penis is not circumcised, pull the foreskin back.
  • Pinch the tip of the condom to remove air and place the rolled-up condom on the end of the penis. Leave about 1/2" of the condom loose at the end to collect the semen (cum). Unroll the condom down to the base of the penis. Smooth out wrinkles.
  • If a condom breaks during sex, pull the penis out immediately and wash gently. Don't douche--it could damage fragile tissues and make things worse.
  • Right after ejaculation and before the erection is gone, withdraw the penis from the other person's body, holding the condom onto the penis with fingers.
  • Remove the condom, then throw it away. Never use a condom twice!
  • Wash semen (cum) off the penis with soap and warm water before you have more sexual contact.

Warning: check condoms for added spermicide (nonoxydol 9); spermcide can cause tissue irritation in both men and women possibly increasing the chance of HIV/STD transmission.

Use a condom every time you have oral,
anal or vaginal sex!

For information on the effectiveness of male latex condoms, see the CDC's fact sheet: http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/pubs/facts/condoms.htm
